Dans la région,
nous commençons à connaître les carrières de sarcophages du « Béout
» utilisés par la classe aisée de 400 ans à 800 ans environ,
jusqu’à Charlemagne.
A l’époque mérovingienne au Vème siècle, ils sont de forme
trapézoïdale et sous les carolingiens ils sont presque
droits.
Mais il existe dans la région de Lourdes et la vallée
d’Argelès plus d’une quarantaine de carrières.
Dans celle qui nous intéresse aujourd’hui, nous pouvons
compter une trentaine d’enlèvements, cuves et couvercles, au
dessus du sentier, mais aussi en dessous.
Le point commun à toutes ces carrières est la nature de la roche,
calcaire et compacte, sans faille.
La roche est pétrie de fossiles marins : Les « Toucasia
» , bivalves qui vivaient il y a environ 110 millions
d’années dans la boue d’une mer peu profonde et chaude,
subtropicale. Mais depuis les Pyrénées sont sorties de la mer sous
la pression des plaques tectoniques Afrique et Ibérique contre la
plaque Européenne.

aurez une vue imprenable sur la cité et la région.
