Welcome to Corey Peak, highpoint* for Mineral County, clocking in at 10,502 ft.
This is probably one of the easier high points to grab. If you have nerves of steel, a narrow rig with a short wheelbase, and a whole lot of confidence, you can drive right up to within a 50 feet of this one.
If you lack the near ATV nimbleness, you can get to about 1300 feet.
If you lack the short wheelbase of a Jeep, you can get to .3 mile as a crow flies.
If you lack an iron constitution when faced with a narrow roadway that is perched on the side of a steep drop, well, enjoy the walk.
In my Dad's Tacoma we were able to get to the first switchback before the turns became too tight. So, on with the pack, and up the road I go! Nice beautiful walk that took this wolf an hour to clear that .3 mile and 800 foot climb. 30 minutes up the rest of the switchbacks, and then 30 minutes on the most unrefined "road" I've ever had the unfortunate luck of putting boot to.
Don't forget to claim the benchmark up here, an aluminum one! I found reference mark 2, but #1 is supposed to be 38 ft away at a bearing of 67 degrees. I only found a bush when I projected the waypoint. Both at copper nails with washers stamped USGS BM.
*But wait, you cry, Corey isn't the highpoint for Mineral, the towering Mt. Grant (11,280+) is. Well, yes, you are correct. However, Mt. Grant has one minor little issue... It's private property. But, you counter, then go ask permission! Sure, and the book Hiking Nevada's County Highpoints by Bob Sumner details out exactly how to go about applying for permission... For, you see, it's owned by the U.S. Army. Welcome to Hawthorne!
Update: April 23, 2015
RGJ reports the Army is allowing the public back into My. Grant for hiking or fishing. Arrangements still need to be made, but it's easier now.
