This cache is placed near one of the last remaining vestiges of the industry that sustained most of the communities in the region: the mill. Drakes Mill has remained in its original state since it was built.
Unfortunately, time is taking it toll. This past winter, of 2011, proved to be the beginning of the end for this unrecognized, forgotten piece of history. I placed this cache because I wanted to share a view of this building before it collapses upon itself, or is razed.
The building and lot itself are off limits and posted, so please observe the signs and limit your visit to a view from the cache. Be sure to bring your camera and snap a few photos, as its future is unknown.
For a brief history of this building, check out Theodore R. Hazen;s site about the mill and restoration: http://www.angelfire.com/journal/millbuilder/drake2.html
*****UPDATE*******
In February 2013, the landowners had the building razed. I'm guessing t was for safety and eyesore reasons. The pile of rubble and wood that used to be the last remaining mill in the area burned and smouldered for 8 weeks afterwards....
