Geocache Description:

You are looking for a small bottle with small swag and will need to bring your own pen. Happy caching.

You are in the old Whittington Park baseball field. On the hillside near the rear of the parking lot you can even see the concrete remains of the bleachers. A homeplate has been painted on the asphalt.

On St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1918, Babe Ruth, playing for the Boston Red Sox, hit a homerun in Whittington Park. This was the first time that Babe ever played against a major league team in any position other than pitcher. He hit a drive to right field that flew over the fence and landed across the street in the Alligator Farm. Reportedly, even the opposing team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, stood up and cheered. One week later he hit another ball across right field that landed in the pond at the Alligator Farm, a distance of between 507 and 573 feet, depending upon in which pond it landed. These homeruns altered his life as a baseball player. The team began to rely on him in positions other than pitching so that he would be batting in each game.

This is part of the newly created (2012) baseball trail in Hot Springs. Visit this link (visit link) to learn more about the history of baseball in Hot Springs. Please be sure to also read the signs erected near the Alligator Farm. You can pick up a brochure for the entire trail there or at the Hot Springs Visitors' Center in Hill Wheatley Plaza in the next block south of bathhouse row.
