Cache is located in a secluded area near a western entry point to Dare County just off US 64. The Ferry Docks were no longer needed when the nearby bridge was built spanning the Alligator River. In summer months thousands of visitors enter Dare County each day along the east-west route that crosses the Alligator River.
Founded in 1870, The history of the area dates back to the 1580s with the short-lived Roanoke Colony. The county has a total area of 1,562 square miles making it the largest county in North Carolina by total area. However, only 384 square miles is land, the remaining 75.44% is water. The 2010 census population was 33,920.
This cache is also placed in honor of those heroes who died 10 years ago in the terrorist attacks on our nation.
