Rundhäll / Slab
[Svenska]
bland oss,
bl.a. rullstensåsar, moränryggar, klapperstensfält och
i isen.
Bergknallens nedströmssida ligger i lä och blir ofta kantig och
uppsprucken.

[English]
The last glacial episode (known as Weichsel, Würm, Wisconsin,
Devensian and more)
started out about 100 000 years ago and covered Sweden with a
sereral kilometer
thick layer of ice. The ice had melted away about 8500 years ago
and left great
impact at the earth's surface, eskers, shingle beaches and slabs
amongst
other things.
The thick and heavy ice carried loads of gravel and rock and when
it slides over
a piece of rock the weight and gravel makes it work like a grinder.
Slowly, slowly
grinding and polishing the upstream side of the slab to a smooth
and rounded shape.
The downstream side will get cracked up and get some rough edges.
Pieces that break
loose from the downstream side often gets frozen into the ice and
continue work as
grinder on the next rock the ice meets.

the glacial movement
The downstreams side of slabs are often covered with soil and
gravel so they are
hard to see. At this slab these masses were removed in the 1990's
and the downstream
side is fully exposed and you easily can see the cracked and rough
formation.
To log this earthcache, Send a message with the answer to these two
questions
HERE!
You don't have to wait for approval prior to your log but logs
without answers in
reasonable time will be deleted.
* How high is the downstream side of the Slab?
* In which cardinal direction has the ice moved to form this
Slab?
A photograph or two is always nice to see, feel free to upload them
with your log.
