According to Algonquin Indian legend, a great giant scooped up a handful of rocks and dirt and threw it into the sound, creating Tuxis Island, which can be seen just offshore from the end of Island Avenue or from West Wharf Road. Official records show the island has had several owners from as early as 1674. In 1900 the New Haven YMCA ran a camp out there for nine years; it is currently owned by the Madison Beach Club. No, you don't have to swim or paddle out to the island. Instead, enjoy a short stroll on this new boardwalk while searching for the cache. A viewing area juts out about half-way down the walk and overlooks a pond. This is where the giant scooped up the rocks and dirt- Tuxis Pond.
