Geocache Description:

i've been thinking about some hides in Marshallville for a while now. some of these are hid at points of interest. some are sneaky. some are quick and easy. some are a combination of all those descriptions.

a small cemetery with the grave of a revolutionary war solider. his name is Conrad Metzger His parents were probably Adam and Anne Katharine Metzger from Gambach, Oberhessen, Hessen, Germany. He may have been born on 6/13/1758. He was four years old when he immigrated and about 16 yrs old when he joined the Continental Army. He later served as a Private in the 1st New Jersey Infantry. He was given a pension for his service and buried as a revolutionary in Wayne County , Ohio.

Conrad is buried in the Marshallville cemetery, West and adjacent to the town, North side of the cemetery, Baughman twp. Small granite stone states Born 1758 and died about. 1856. DAR Marker "Conrad Mitsco, 1st New Jersey Infantry, revolutionary Solder, Rev. War." (marker is replaced, i think, with a regular veterans upright marker. you can barely still read Conrad Mitsco with the naked eye, but that may be only because that is what you are looking for and a 1776 flag holder is there)

Conrad, joined or enlisted in the State militia and in 1778 the regular service, for five yrs. He was 16 or 17 yrs old when he joined the State Militia. He was in the battles of Springfield, Mammoth and Yorktown. In 1818 he applied for a pension. His will was probated in 1852. He was on the tax list in 1825 for Wayne County. I believe he married Margaret Flowers, his last wife, in New Jersey. I believe in the 1810 Census when they were in Plum Township in Allegany County, Pa that he had 8 children with him these included all but Mary and Hannah, who were married and probably living near by.

In 1840, he was receiving a pension and was listed as 82 yrs old He moved to Wayne County from Allegany County, Plum Twp, Pa between 1810 and 1820. I believe nine children with him. David was living in Wayne County, Baughman Twp in 1820. James was living in Wayne County, Milton Twp. in 1830. Margaret, Nancy, and William Metzger helped start a Presbyterian Church in Marshallville in 1843. David was living in Chippewa Twp in the 1850 census.

this information is from the book "In Memoriam, A compilation of the locations of the grave sites of Veterans buried in Wayne County, Ohio" by Marvin R Oswald and a web site of the same information and from other sources put together and maintained by Barney Kaufman (visit link)

we owe all of our veterans so much, but men like Conrad helped to free this nation. he is one of sixty know revolutionary war veterans buried in Wayne County, according to research sited above, and this is why i want you to come here. cache does not disturb graves but please look around a bit. as with all cemetery caches daylight hours only. you are looking for a small pill bottle camoed for it's environment. there is room for small trade items, but I think I forgot to add a pen so please bring your own writing implement.
