ALOHA from O'ahu

---Historic Hale'iwa Town---

Hale'iwa is a North Shore community in the Waialua District of the island of O'ahu, City and County of Honolulu. The word Hale'iwa means "house of the frigate bird" in Hawaiian. It is located on Waialua Bay at the mouth of the Anahulu River where there is a small boat harbor. The shore of the bay is surrounded by Hale'iwa Beach Park on the north and Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach Park on the south. The Kaiaka State Recreation Area is to the west. In 2010 the population of Hale'iwa was 3,970. It is the largest commercial center on the North Shore with many restaurants, art galleries and boutiques. Its old plantation town character is preserved in its buildings, making this a popular destination for both tourists and residents.

The town’s architecture has the feel of the early 1900’s plantation era and in 1984 Haleiwa was designated a State Historic, Cultural and Scenic District. All new construction must adhere to stringent specifications to preserve the Territorial architecture of Haleiwa’s early sugar industry days.
