Geocache Description:

An Corran

One of a series of caches placed at historic sites on the Isle of Skye.

An Corran may be the oldest human site on Skye being Mesolithic (8500–5000BP).

The first arrivals on the north-west coast were bands of hunter-gatherers known as Mesolithic (Greek meso = ‘middle’ and lithos = ‘stone’ or Middle Stone Age peoples. A shell midden (a heap of food debris consisting mainly of sea shells) found here is generally accepted as the first proof of Mesolithic man on Skye. The site at An Corran has been dated to around 8500BP. Apart from its historical significance, this remote spot, rarely visited by tourists, is quite special.

On the beach at An Corran you may at low tide find footprints left by a family of dinosaurs that walked across the sand 165 million years ago! They were Ornithopods, herbivorous creatures that walked on two legs. The footprints are best seen after a winter storm as they are often covered by the sea at high tide and by sand in the summer.

Thanks to kaiandcarole for this information: There is a lovely sandy beach close by - at low tide once a year the local cattle are herded at full gallop down the slope, onto the sand and before they get chance to think they are in the sea and swimming to Staffin island for winter grazing.

Park in the large parking area at An Corran, and walk back up the road to the cache site.
