Geocache Description:

I will show you one of the greatest military buildings in Valcanale. It's maintained by the group Landscapes http://www.landscapesvalcanale.eu/benvenuti/. It's opened at special days and hours, or you can call for visit in advance.

Short description: You need good lights.

Be carefull to open the hidding place because the cachebox is made of glas.

The following information is from the user "lynx.attentus". Thanks a lot.

Between WWI and WWII Italy (among other countries like France, Germany, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Greece) was building it's own fortification system on the borders. You have perhaps heard for Maginot's line or Siegfried's line in France. Well in Italy it was the Alpine Wall (Vallo Alpino in Italian). In kingdom of Yugoslavia it was called The Rupnik's line. Well let's go back to our fortress.

It was built as a part of Vallo Alpino. In the year 1943 this sector was part of Vallo alpino orientale with the XIV Corps in Treviso and this sector was no. XVII Tarvisio. It was guarded by G.A.F. (guardia alla frontiera) which was basically part of the armed forces of Italian kingdom.

Anyway, the whole wall was built between 1931 and 1943. Our fortress was built before the WWII. It was armed with rifles, machineguns and anti-tank rifles. After WWII it was modernized as you've seen it. The whole alpine wall was used until the end of Cold war and it was decommissioned in 1988 when all the armament was taken out of the bunkers.

Happy caching

Greetings speedstar
