Madeira
Cidade da ilha da Madeira, sede de
concelho e capital da região autónoma, localiza-se na Região
Autónoma da Madeira (RAM), respetivamente NUTS I, II e III. Situada
na encosta sul da ilha, a cidade ergue-se em anfiteatro, entre
jardins, árvores e plantações de cana-de-açúcar, bananeiras, milho,
etc. Dista aproximadamente 1000 km do cabo da
Roca.
A
designação de Funchal deve-se à existência da planta "funcho" que
proliferava no burgo primitivo e se expandia até ao
mar.
Teve o primeiro foral entre 1452 e 1454,
que o elevou à categoria de vila e sede de concelho. Em 1508 foi
elevado à categoria de cidade.
Ao nível
do património arquitetónico, destacam-se alguns monumentos, todos
eles classificados como Monumentos Nacionais: a Igreja de S. João
Evangelista, do século XVII, uma obra dos jesuítas e considerada
como uma das mais valiosas peças de talha seiscentista portuguesa;
o Mosteiro e a Igreja de Santa Clara, construídos entre 1489 e
1496, em estilo hispano-árabe; o Palácio de S. Lourenço, da
primeira metade do século XV, em estilo manuelino; a Sé Catedral,
construída por Pero Annes a mando do rei D. Manuel e que possui um
dos mais belos tetos de Portugal feitos em madeira da ilha e a Sé
Catedral, da primeira metade do século XVI (1514), onde se pode ver
uma mistura de estilos: flamengo, com linhas góticas e
características arquitetónicas do período manuelino. De entre as
suas velhas igrejas de salientar as de Santa Maria Maior, S. Pedro
e Santa Lúcia, e ainda as capelas de Santa Catarina e a das Almas,
aberta na rocha.
Edifícios
importantes são ainda o Paço Episcopal, o palácio do governo
regional, a Câmara Municipal, o Teatro Municipal Baltasar Dias, a
Casa da Alfândega, e os museus das Cruzes, Municipal e de Arte
Sacra.
O Forte
do Ilhéu e a Fortaleza do Pico são monumentos históricos
testemunhos da necessidade de um sistema defensivo eficaz, no
século XVII, devido aos frequentes ataques dos corsários. De
referir que o Forte do Ilhéu é também classificado como Imóvel de
Interesse Público.
Desde 1976 a Madeira é uma região autónoma da República Portuguesa.
Possui órgãos próprios como a Assembleia Legislativa da Madeira e o Governo
Regional. O Estado Português é representado na região pelo
Representante da República para a Região Autónoma da Madeira.
A Assembleia Legislativa é um parlamento unicameral composto por 47
deputados. Os deputados são eleitos para um mandato de quatro anos
em listas apresentadas pelos partidos num círculo eleitoral
único.
Os partidos presentes na Região Autónoma da Madeira encontram-se
ligados aos grandes partidos do espectro político português. Nas
últimas eleições legislativas regionais realizadas a 6 de Maio de
2007 consagrou-se como vencedor o PSD-Madeira com uma maioria
esmagadora (64,2 por cento). O cargo de Presidente do Governo
Regional tem sido ocupado por Alberto João Jardim, reeleito nas
sucessivas eleições desde 1978.

City of Madeira, the county seat and capital of
the autonomous region, is located in the Autonomous Region of
Madeira (RAM), respectively NUTS I, II and
III. Situated on the southern slopes of the island, the
city rises like an amphitheater, gardens, trees and plantations of
sugar cane, bananas, corn, etc.. Dista about 1000 km from Cabo da
Roca.
The designation
of Funchal due to the existence of the plant "fennel" that
proliferated in the borough early and expanded to the
sea.
He had the first charter between 1452 and 1454,

architectural heritage, we highlight a few monuments, all
classified as National Monuments: Church of

of Santa Clara, built between 1489 and 1496 in Hispanic-Arabic
style, the Palace of S. Lawrence, the first half of the fifteenth century
in Manueline, the cathedral, built by Pero Annes on the orders of
King Manuel, who has one of the most beautiful of
Portugal roofs made of wood from the island and the Cathedral, the
first half of the sixteenth century (1514), where you can see a
mixture of styles: flamenco, with lines and Gothic architectural
features of the period Manueline .Among its old churches emphasize the Santa Maria
Maggiore, S. Peter and St. Lucia, and also the chapels of Santa
Catarina and the Souls, opened in the
rock.
Important
buildings are still the Bishop's Palace, the palace of the regional
government, City Hall, the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, Customs
House, and museums of Crosses, Hall and Sacred
Art.
The Fort of the
islet and Fortress Peak are historical monuments testimonies of the
necessity of an effective defensive system in the seventeenth
century, due to frequent attacks from
pirates. Note that the Fort Islet is also classified as a
Public Interest.
Since 1976,
Madeira is an autonomous region of
Portugal. It has its own organs as the Legislative Assembly
and the Regional Government of Madeira. The Portuguese state is represented in the region
by the Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of
Madeira.
The Legislature
is a unicameral parliament composed of 47
deputies. Members are elected for a term of four years on
lists submitted by parties in a single
constituency.
The parties
present in the Autonomous Region of Madeira are linked to the major
parties of the political spectrum
Portuguese. In recent regional elections held on May 6, 2007
was acclaimed as the winner PSD-Wood with an overwhelming majority
(64.2 percent). The office of President of the Regional Government
has been occupied by Alberto Joao Jardim, re-elected in successive
elections since 1978.
