Geocache Description:

Tato earthkes Vas privede do nejvychodnejsí casti Ceske republiky v katastru obce Bukovec.

Necekejte zadne velke raseliniste podobne tem velkym znamym. Jedna se o male degradujici raseliniste. A jeho ukazka je principem teto earthkese. Kdo chce videt klasicka raseliniste musi zvolit k navsteve jinou lokalitu.

horske oblasti - ombrogenni vrchoviste podminena vysokym rocnim uhrnem srazek
panevni oblasti - udolni minerogenni raseliniste v bezodtokych terennich depresich s nepropustnymi dny

Tolik by stacilo k teorii a ted jiz k otazkam:

  1. Jaka je vymera prirodni rezervace Bukovec-Olecky?
  3. Jaké dva zajimave druhy dvoukridleho hmyzu zde byly nalezeny?
  4. Co zpusobuje degradaci raseliniste?
Nepovinne muzete pridat k vasemu logu foto z mista earthkese.

ENGLISH VERSION (THE INFORMATION TABLE IS IN CZECH ONLY, PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR HELP)

This earthcache will bring you to the easternmost part of Czech Republic near village Bukovec. At the posted coordinates you will find beginning of the educational trail, where you can learn some information about local area, especially about nature reserve Bukovec-Olecky with degraded peat bog.

But first, something about peat bog itself

The peat bog is a wetland that produces and accumulates organogenic mass (plant material). This means that production of organic mass is much more considerable that its decomposition. The organogenic mass can be formed from dead parts of peat moss (Sphagnum sp.) in condition of permanently wet areas.

Peat formation takes place in the aquatic environment in the absence of air in which the cellulose and other carbohydrates decompose according to the overall equation: C6H10O5 = CO2 + 3 H2O + CH4 + 4C

Peat bogs can be divided according to many factors, for instance:

by chemistry
  1. minerotrophic (fen) - take water that has passed through mineral soil, characterized by high groundwater level, occupying terrain depression
  2. ombrotrophic (bog) - form characteristic peat formations rising above the surrounding terrain, nutrients taken only in rainfall water
  3. mesotrophic - a transition between ombrotrophic and minerotrophic habitat
by hydrology
  1. ombrogenic - in terms of water regime, these peat bogs take water only from rainfall
  2. geogenic - peat bogs opened also to other sources of water than only rainfall
    - limnogenic - develops along slowly flowing rivers or lakes
    - topogenic - develops in the terrain depression with a local groundwater flow
  3. soligenic - develops in the flow of surface water (spring, overflowing, flow peat bog)

Also pH is related to the type of peat bog:

Ombrotrophic 3,8
Transitional 4,1-4,8
Minerotrophic 5,6-7,5

In the Czech Republic the peat bogs are found predominantly in Bohemia (Jizerske Mountains, Krusne Mountains, Sumava). In Moravia there is a significant peat bog Rejviz in Jeseniky Mountains.
Generally, the occurrence of peat in the Czech Republic is bound to:
mountain areas - ombrotrophic bogs characterized by high total annual rainfall
valley areas - valley minerotrophic peat bog in drainless terrain depressions with impermeable bottoms

That´s all with theory and now to the questions:

  1. What is the area of Nature Reserve Bukovec-Olecko??
  2. What type of peat bog is located here; fens, bogs or transitional type?
  3. What are two interesting species of Diptera (dvoukridli) that have been found here?
  4. What causes the degradation of peat bog?
Optional task is to upload picture(s) from earthcache location to your log.
