THERMAL SPRINGS OF "LADEIRA DA VELHA"
The thermal springs of "Ladeira da Velha", nowadays almost forgotten, was during the XIX and early XX century, the target of several studies and articles published due to its famous waters in the treatment of rheumatism, leprosy and skin diseases.
It´s been reported that the German chemist, Albretch Welhauser analyzed the water and sent it to the "special studies" of the famous Madame Curie (Nobel prize of Physics and Chemistry).
The photo below dates back to 1941. Since the thermal springs were so close to the ocean and in the winter the waves were quite big, a cover was built to avoid the waves and they would pass over the structure that was built in between the rocks. Today the coverage no longer exists. There are only four walls filled with thermal water.

A nascente termal da Ladeira da Velha, actualmente esquecida por quase todos, foi durante o século XIX e início do século XX alvo de vários estudos e artigos publicados devido à fama que as suas águas tinham no tratamento de reumatismo, lepra e doenças da pele.
Consta que o químico alemão Albretch Welhauser analisou a água e chegou a enviá-la para os "estudos especiais" da célebre madame Curie (prémio nobel da física e da química).
Esta foto remonta ao ano de 1941. Como o balneário era perto do mar e de Inverno a água chegava até à encosta, foi feita uma cobertura de forma que as ondas passassem por cima da estrutura que se encontrava embutida entre as rochas. Hoje em dia a cobertura já não existe. Existem apenas as quatro paredes cheias até cima com água termal.
