León Dormido, literally translated into English as "the Sleeping Lion", is a much-photographed rock formation on the western side of the Island of San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands.
The remains of a lava cone eroded by the sea, two rocks rise dramatically up from the ocean. The rocky outcrop is a haven for several species of sea birds, including Nazca (masked) Boobies, Blue-footed Boobies, Frigate birds, Red-billed Tropic Birds, and even the occasional Albatross can be seen cruising by. The small channel between the two rock towers is the perfect snorkel and dive spot, as the walls are encrusted with colourful invertebrates, and it is a haven for Green sea turtles and Galapagos sharks. This geological rarity is thought to be the remains of a volcanic eruption frozen in time. Unlike the black lava rock which is the foundation of the Galapagos Islands, this formation is a result of a unique set of factors at the time of a volcanic eruption… the combination of water temperatures and salinity, depth of the volcanic cone, etc, essentially ‘froze’ the volcanic ash in situ as soon as it erupted, creating this unique geological feature.
What’s in a name? Well, it is thought that the rock formation resembles a sleeping lion… some people have a great deal of trouble envisioning it, but, when viewed on the right day, and the right time of day, with the right lighting, from the right angle, (and having the right imagination), you can see it!

Leon Dormido is approximately 30 minutes by speed boat from the port town of San Cristobal. Because the Galapagos is a National Park, you cannot visit this site independently. Day Tours are available from the town on San Cristobal Island, and they will often include a visit to Isla Lobos (Sea Lion Island, also an experience not to be missed: snorkeling with the playful sealions!). The tour operator will ensure there is a qualified National Park Guide on board (you might need help with question 1 below...).
TO LOG THIS EARTHCACHE, please fulfill the following requirements:
Email the answers to the following questions separately to the cache owner:
1. Estimate how many metres above sea level the rock formation is at its highest point? (no, you can't climb up to get the altitude reading from your gps...)
2. Estimate how many metres from the substrate/seafloor the rock formation rises to its highest point at both i) the mid-point in the channel and ii) the outermost edge. (Add your estimate above to your estimate of the depth at both points). Given what you now know about the origins of the formation, hypothesize as to the difference you observe?
3. Describe the rock material. Explain why it might be the colour it is.
4. Take a picture of yourself/your party/your gps in front of the Sleeping Lion and post it with your log (Optional).
5. Tell us about your experience in your log! Include a list of marine species you saw while at this site and comment on biodiversity at the site, and explain your conviction.

Leon Dormido es una formación rocosa muy fotografiado en el lado occidental de la Isla de San Cristóbal en las Islas Galápagos.
Los restos de un cono de lava erosionada por el mar, dos rocas aumentando de manera espectacular desde el mar. El afloramiento rocoso es un refugio para varias especies de aves marinas, incluidas las piqueros Nazca (enmascarados), piqueros de patas azules, fragatas, pajaro de paraiso pico rojo - e incluso el ocasional Albatros se puede ver! Bueno, se piensa que la formación de roca se asemeja a un león dormido ... algunas personas tienen una gran cantidad de problemas para imaginar, pero, cuando se ve en el día correcto y el momento adecuado del día, con la iluminación adecuada, desde el ángulo correcto, (y con la imaginación sufficiente), se la puede ver!

León Dormido es de aproximadamente 30 minutos en lancha desde la ciudad portuaria de San Cristóbal. Debido a las Islas Galápagos siendo un Parque Nacional, no se puede visitar este sitio de forma independiente. Tours diaro se encuentran disponibles en la ciudad de San Cristóbal, y que a menudo incluyen una visita a la Isla Lobos (Isla de los Lobos, también una experiencia que no debe perderse: bucear con los lobos marinos juguetones).
