Geocache Description:

This Geocache is part of a series of caches about the history of Plymouth.
This cache is intended to mark the location of and share information about the Mt. Olivet Chapel and District 51 School.

Thank you to mnfishnutz and Troutonthebrain for help with the location and cache!

Organized in 1854 as the German Evangelical Lutheran Church, the church first met in the Herman Sandhoff home. The church was built in 1880 on land donated by the Sandhoff family (now Mt. Olivet Chapel) and called the "Immanuel Evangelical Church of the Evangelical and Reformed Church of North America." Worship services were conducted in German until the early 1900’s. It was completely restored in 1998 as the Mt Olivet Chapel.
Christoph was the first person buried in the Mount Olivet Cemetery on April 2, 1871. Other early members of Mount Olivet such as the Sandhoff, Schmidt, Roggerman, and Hoppenrath families are buried there.

The District 51 School was located across the street from the Mt. Olivet Chapel and was the first school in Plymouth. It was built as a shanty in 1856, then a log schoolhouse in 1859. It was turned into a house and then later it burned. District 51 consolidated with the Robbinsdale School District in the mid 1950’s.

This is my Girl Scout Gold Award Project (like an Eagle Scout Project). It is a Historical Tour of the City of Plymouth through Geocaches. Plymouthmnhistoricalsociety.com has more information on other historical sites in the city. Currently, it also has approximate GPS coordinates of other sites as well as information and pictures of them. In the future, more Geocaches will be added.
I hope you enjoy the cache and learn something too!
