O farol de Aveiro ou farol da Barra é o maior farol de Portugal.
Fica localizado na praia da Barra, cidade da Gafanha da Nazaré, concelho de Ílhavo, distrito de Aveiro.
Foi, à data da sua construção, o sexto maior do mundo em alvenaria de pedra, continuando a ser actualmente o segundo maior da Península Ibérica, estando incluído nos 26 maiores do mundo. Ergue-se a 66 metros acima do nível do mar, com uma altura de 62 metros.
Construído no século XIX entre os anos de 1885 e 1893, sofreu grandes reparações em 1929. Quem formulou o projecto foi o Eng. Paulo Benjamim Cabral, mas quem o concluiu foi o Eng. Maria de Melo e Mattos.
A fundação da torre é constituída por um maciço de betão de 6 metros de espessura e foi assente sobre estacas à altura das mais baixas águas. Nas alvenarias foram usados o grés vermelho de Eirol e alguns granitos.
O alcance luminoso actual, em condições normais de transparência atmosférica, é de 23 milhas náuticas, cerca de 43 quilómetros.
Originalmente a petróleo, electrificado em 1936, o sistema de iluminação foi melhorado com lentes de Fresnel de 3a ordem em 1937, e ligado à rede eléctrica em 1950, ano em que a lâmpada foi substituída por uma de 1000W.
Possuia originalmente uma sirene de nevoeiro, alojada num edifício separado, que foi arrasado por uma tempestade em 1937. Foram entretanto construídos paredões para proteger o farol.
A escadaria é composta por 271 degraus em pedra e 20 em metal, em forma de caracol, e é complementada desde 1958 por um elevador.
A sua construção custou, na altura, a quantia de 51 contos.
The Aveiro Lighthouse or Barra Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Portugal.
It is located at Barra beach, at Gafanha da Nazaré, Ílhavo municipality, Aveiro county.
At the time of it's building, was the sixth tallest one in stone, and nowadays it remains as the second tallest at the Iberic Peninsula, and one of the 26 tallest of the world. It rises 66 meters above the sea, and is 62 meters tall.
Built in the XIX century, between 1885 and 1893, was repaired in 1929. The project was conceived by Eng. Paulo Benjamim Cabral and concluded by Eng. Maria de Melo e Mattos.
The tower foundation is constituted by a concrete block six meters thick and lies on posts at the height of the deepest waters. On the brickwork, red sandstone from Eirol and some granite were used.
The luminous range, with normal atmosphere conditions, is nowadays 23 nautical miles, about 43 kilometers.
Originally using oil, and electrified in 1936, the illuminating system was improved using 3rd order Fresnel lenses in 1937, connected to the power grid in 1950, at the same time of the light bulb replacement for a 1000w one.
The site originally had a fog signal, lodged in a separate building. The fog signal building was swept away in a storm in 1935. Meanwhile, sea walls have been built to protect the lighthouse.
The staircase has 271 stone and 20 metal steps and it is complemented by an elevator since 1958.
Its construction cost, at the time, 51.000$00 (the equivalent of €255).
