i fjälltrakterna.
rekommenderas.

Here at Stocklycke you can find a concentration of interesting
geological formations created during the last Ice Age and
after that. There is a trail where you can see and learn more
about esker, chute esker, glacial meltwater channels, shingle
bed, sandur and kettle.
Close to the coordinates starts the 2 Km trail and
here you can find an information board about the trail and the
things to see.
The esker, the chute esker and the subglacial meltwater
channels are formations created by meltwater and
sediment running into crevasses under the ice. The meltwater
channels and the chute esker with which you can become
acquainted along the Geological Trail are generally only found
in the mountainous regions of Sweden.
The small shingle bed or beach deposit was created by wave
action against the shoreline in the Baltic Glacial Lake, the
first phase in the formation of the Baltic Sea. The shingle
bed marks the highest level reached by the water at Omberg
after the melting of the ice. Today this shoreline at Omberg
lies about 135 meters above mean sea level. Stocklycke is just
above this shoreline and thus was not submerged when the ice
melted. As the meltwater containing sand and gravel flows over
the surrounding area it creates a braided system of
flow channels. The deposited sediment builds up a flat
rather undulating surface that today is the arable
land immediately to south-west. The glaciofluvial sand
and gravel formation is known geologically by the Icelandic
term sandur.
An iceberg that has broken free from the icesheet was
left behind as stagnant ice. ”Stagnant” means
that the iceberg has become embedded in the sediment from the
meltwater and today we have an imprint of the iceberg in the
form of a depression known in geological terms as a kettle.
To log this cache, please email answers to the following
questions:
1. In what direction from the information board do you find
the esker?
2. How long is the kettle? Measure with your GPS or
estimate.
3. How deep is the glacial meltwater channel? This question is
allowed to skip if there is deep snow in winter time.
Optional you are welcome to take a picture at the place and
attach to the log.
There are several interesting trails in this area that also
can be recommended.
