Just off one of the many paths that surround Sugar Loaf/Y Fâl
This cache was placed by Scouts from 1st Upton St Leonards Scout Troop, Gloucester during a hike on Sugar Loaf during their winter weekend at Pwll Du (between Abergavenny and Blaenavon).
Its name - "Sweet spot" - is derived from the fact that it's close to an Ordnance Survey spot height on the lower slopes of Sugar Loaf.
Sugar Loaf's proper name is Y Fâl, but it derived its nickname when people started to buy sugar in blocks from their grocers. The block was fixed into a mechanical device that was used to shave sugar from one end of the block (a bit like how a pencil sharpener sharpens a pencil). The resultant shape of the block resembled Y Fâl's distinctive profile.
Translated into English Y Fâl simply means "the peak" or "the summit" - "bâl". The "b" of "bâl" mutates to an "f" as "bâl" is a feminine noun and in Y Fâl it's preceded by "Y" or "the".
When the cache was placed, it contained cache card, a 1st Upton St Leonards Scout Group name tape (worn on the right sleeve of a uniform top), a log book and a pencil. We also included a Georgia, USA state pin as we have a link with a Boy Scouts of America Troop near Atlanta.
This cache was placed with the kind permission of Yr Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol / The National Trust.
Congratulations to FTF stug53!!
