Cette église date d'au moins huit siècles, mais elle fut reconstruite en 1750. Le clocher date de 1884 et à côté subsiste un petit cloître qui appartenait aux Capucins. L'Archange placée sur le clocher fait office de girouette.
Avec ceux du Château et de Cimiez, le petit cimetière Saint Barthélemy est un des trois champs funéraires monumentaux de Nice qui par la variété de ses architectures et le prestige des défunts qui y reposent constitue un véritable témoignage d’histoire autant qu’un élément du patrimoine niçois. Entre autres on trouve ici la tombe de Jean Behra, célèbre coureur automobile. Ici repose aussi un ancien maire de Nice avec sa femme.
