Current info:
The fish pond is currently under renovation, but soon it will be
even nicer than before.
We would like to guide you to Boda, a small village only a few
km from Pécs. You see many nice and interesting things here. For
example a geocache. :-)
How to get here
From Pécs take route 6 towards Szigetvár. A sign will indicate
where you need to turn off the main road. Drive on for 3 km after
your turn, and soon you will notice the fish pond and fish nursery
on your right side. Pass these a bit, in order to get to the
parking lot. You may walk from here. There is a picnic area near
the parking lot.
The lakes were created in 1996. They are managed by the
Mecsekalja Angler Association. One of the lakes has a little island
in the middle, connected to the shore by a bridge. The bridge is
not in its best shape, walk on it very carefully. I wanted to hide
the cache on this island first, but I could not find an appropriate
place for it.
Boda
The name of the village originates from the Slavik name Buda, Boda,
Budimer. It is a typical small village of Baranya county.
The area has already been inhibited in the Bronze Age. Many
artifacts have been found form the Roman Age. During the reign of
the first Hungarian king, István, the Saint, probably a castle was
erected here. During the Middle Ages the village had its own parish
- which shows the importance of the settlement. Boda has not been
abandoned during the Ottoman rule, as many other villages. Its
inhabitants are known to be Hungarians from those times.
In the 18th century it was part of the Preuner estate, later it was
owned by the Eszterházy family.
Its current church was built in 1908 in honor of John the
Baptist.
Tourism
The Vintage in Boda (Bodai szüret) is always an important
event in the life of the village. Each year it is held on the first
Saturday of October, as part of the "Mediterranean Fall" countywide
festivities.
Following the traditions, the events start with a procession of
horsemen followed by folk dancers. Local and guest folk dance
groups entertain the audience, and there is music all day long on
the open air stage. Also there is a crafts market and there is
entertainment for the children as well, such as face painting,
games, arts and crafts.
The Bee-keeper's Museum (Méhész múzeum) is located in a
nice and quiet area, in Petofi street 39. Ferenc Graf's apiary
operates here since 1985. He produces colza, linden, and sunflower
honey besides the always popular acacia. The house treasures a
candle collection, rarities made of bee wax and honey. Mr. Graf has
continuously been developing his museum which is unique in the
country, or maybe even in Europe. He is an avid collector of
artifacts related to bee-keeping. He owns century old tools and
beehives. He also displays honey samples from other countries (for
example Finnish, Greek, British, Croatian) produced in various
years.
Ferenc Graf is a kind person, visitors are always welcome, either
individually or as a group.
Happy caching!
