Geocache Description:

The village of Bredgar has many attractions and access to the Cache is suitable for all. Watch out for the muggles who may be nearby. Happy hunting.

No one knows how old the church of St John the Baptist is. The lower part of the 83 foot high tower is Norman and the West door of the tower is a fine example of Norman craftsmanship. Nevertheless it is believed that some of the stones at the base of the tower are part of an earlier Saxon Church.

Most knowledge of the church’s history dates from the founding of a chantry and college of the Holy Trinity by Robert de Bradegare in 1393 when the church was greatly enlarged.

In 1892 a major renovation was undertaken when the box pews were removed and the floor of the nave lowered.

The East windows in the north aisle and the North Chancel window contains remains of the early 14th and 15th century stained glass. During the last war a flying bomb falling some distance away sucked out all the glass, scattering it on the ground. The vicar at the time, the Rev. O. H. May, rescued every piece and when the windows were re-glazed it was all put back together.

There are six bells in the belfry, the oldest of which dates back to 1579 and was made by Robert Mot.

In 1987/1988 the last major restoration was undertaken when the tower was restored. The cost of £28,000 was met by English Heritage, The Historic Churches Preservation Trust, Marshalls Charity, Friends of Kent Churches and other contributions.

The container you are looking for does not contain a pen as it is a nano cache with perhaps the smallest log sheet going. Please initial the sheet only and to save you time, only unravel as much as you need to sign. The cache can be found at:

N 51 18.726
E 000 41.X02

To fill in the X find the phone number on the sign on the gate (there are TWO gates into the Church yard) that proves we do not have silly water in Bredgar. The most common number replaces the X.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
