Geocache Description:

Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past. They are formed as when sediment covers the remains of a living organism and either encases the remains or replaces the remains as the sediment forms rock. As such they are very rare as the sediment has to encase the organism almost immediately after death.

When a fossil is formed it is usually within a layer of rock referred to as a fossiliferous bed that is formed from the remnants of organic matter. One such layer exists along the Fredericton fault that runs through this area. When the new highway was being built the excavation exposed not only the layers comprising the folds from the fault but a layer of fossiliferous rock containing various fossils these were transported the 100 or so meters from the nearby cut to make up the fill for this section of highway. Please visit this site as the rock cut nearby is very close to the highway. As you travel closer to the posted cords you will see various pieces of these rocks containing fossils. Take your time looking over them as they contain many different types of organisms.

To log this as a find please try to identify what type of organism is most prominent in these rocks (i.e. Plant, Animal, insect, etc.) and e-mail me the answer. Pictures of the area and/or the fossils are more than welcome.
