Travel North on US 52 from Bland, VA on North Scenic Highway for around 2.8 miles. Due to the area and extreme height it is not recommened for kids or people scared of heights. Be very careful with pets. There is a huge drop on one side here.
In this area you will have access to the world famous Appalachian Trail. See for miles from a great view point. Travel on the N. Scenic Highway. You'll get to see the Mountain Range from what seems like eye level.
This area is part of the Brushy Mountains which is apart of the larger Appalachian Mountain Range. Look at the mountains in this area and think about how they were formed. How much force must have it taken to form these mountains?
In an event called the Alleghanian Orogeny, the oceanic crust was subducted beneath the continent that would someday be called North America. This made the continent that would be called Africa drift closer to North America. The continents continued to drift, until they collided. This massive collision caused the land to fold upward, creating the Brushy Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. />
The Alps is another example of a fold mountain.
Mountains can be created in several different ways:
Fold Mountain
As the name implies, the Earth with great pressure has taken pieces of itself over time, pushed upward and folded them over onto itself. Land masses colided into one another. An example here is the Appalachian mountains.
Volcanic Mountain These are mountains formed by volcanoes and further shaped by the eruption, lava flows and collaspes. Mount St. Helen is an example of a volcanic mountain.
Dome Mountain Dome mountains have a dome shape or top. Black Hills of South Dakota has some excellent examples of dome top mountains. It is believed that erosion is a major factor in the developement of this type of mountain.
Plateau Mountains Just look at the Catskills of New York to see this type of mountain. It is describe as 'high levels' of flat land.
