Geocache Description:

A cache placed near Smethwick Galton Bridge Railway Station. Not on railway property.

About SideTracked
We have Motorway Mayhem. We have A-Road Anarchy and even Village Vexation. Now a series for public transport users! SideTracked Caches are intended to provide quick cache-and-dashes at train stations.

History
The station was opened in 1995, named after the adjacent Galton Bridge, when the line from Birmingham Snow Hill reopened. Smethwick Galton Bridge replaces Smethwick West, with remains of Smethwick West platforms still visible when passing by train.

Galton Bridge
Galton Bridge was built by Thomas Telford in 1829; it spans Birmingham Canal Navigation New Main Line, carrying Roebuck Lane, which is now closed to traffic to preserve the bridge. The bridge is a Grade 1 listed building. It was cast by Horsley Ironworks, at Tipton, then in Staffordshire, which also cast many of the smaller canal bridges on the navigation system throughout the country.

Services
The station is managed by London Midland, with some services provided by Chiltern Railways, and Arriva Trains Wales.
The station is situated where two lines cross at different levels: the line from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stourbridge Junction crosses over the Stour Valley Line by means of a bridge. There are four platforms, two on each line.

About the Cache –The cache is a small magnetic container, which needs to be re-placed carefully in a position under the old disused electrics box. There is a magnet inside at each end of the cache. It is better if the cache is replaced with the screw top uppermost, to prevent water getting inside.
