November 10, 1775 was the birthday of the US Marines. This cache is dedicated to them.
In 1805, the Marines were sent to Derna, Lybia on a mission to rescue the kidnapped crew of the USS Philidelphia. They marched across 600 miles of desert and stormed a fortified city. Whith thier victory there the Marines helped Prince Hamet Bey regain his throne as ruler of Tripoli and in gratitude he presented the Mameluke Sword to the Marines. This sword is still used today by enlisted NCO, Staff NCO's and officers in the Marine ranks.
