Registration is now closed. It is however still possible to register at the event.
Sweden's largest and oldest annual geocaching event - Fumble After Dark - will in 2011 be held on the 5th of November. Geocachers, their families and their friends from all over the world are welcome to join and take part in this completely unique experience. Fumble After Dark, which during 2010 reached MEGA status with more than 500 participants, is the world's largest night geocaching event. It is held for the 9th year in a row, and 2011 will be the largest and most extraordinary event ever.

This page will be updated often up until the event, and there will also be a dedicated event webpage located at fad.geocaching.se where more detailed information will be released. You will also have to register yourself as a participant for the event on beforehand in addition to posting a "will attend" log. Registration is mandatory for all participants.

This year, as well as last year, there will be a mandatory fee for participating solely to cover all event costs. The cost per person is 60 SEK if payment is made at least 24 hours before the event. Children (under 16 years of age) participates for free in the company of their parents. If payment is made at the event, the price is 100 SEK.

The event


In contrast to previous years, Fumble After Dark is now registered as one event. Although the night caching part will always be the prime trademark of Fumble After Dark, it is first and foremost a gathering of multiple happenings. From before noon and until late afternoon, a number of activities will be held; lectures, workshops, guided tours and both indoor and outdoor activities suitable for everyone between small children to thrill-seeking adults.

Come evening and nightfall, the concept that started this whole thing, the characteristics of the event will somewhat change. A vast number of geocaches of different terrain and difficulty rating are placed in the surroundings, only available during the event. The coordinates for the geocaches are handed out after dusk, and the hunt goes on until near midnight. As the geocaches are temporary, the level of creativity has virtually no limits. Expect to see stuff you would never come across otherwise. There will however still be time to mingle and meet new friends, talk to sponsors and explore the surroundings. If you are a bit cold and feel like staying indoors, we will have lots of activities for you as well.

Food


Matexpressen will be present and serve two different lunch dishes between 12.00 and 15.00:
  • Filet of chicken with paprika sauce and rice
  • Vegetarian "beef" with paprika sauce and rice
Included in the price is salad, bread and soft drinks. The price for adults is 68 SEK, children up to the age of 13 pays 45 SEK.

The location


In 2011, Fumble After Dark is yet again held on the Swedish west coast, more precisely in the municipality of Lerum just northeast of Gothenburg. Lerum is a rather small but lively municipality with roughtly 38.000 inhabitants. Lerum is known by its beautiful nature with many lakes and forests, making the surroundings optimal for geocaching and hiking. The close proximity to the lakes Aspen and Sävelången as well as the river Säveån makes water ever present throughout the whole area. Lerum is located within a 10 minute drive from Gothenburg and is well connected in terms of trains and buses. Lerum/Gothenburg and the Västra Götaland region is also Sweden's most cache-dense area with over 10000 active geocaches within a 100 km radius, so you will have plenty to do before and after the event.

Although the exact event location is a closely guarded secret up until the last hours before the event, making sure you have somewhere to stay in the proximity of Lerum/Floda and Gothenburg is a good idea. There are plenty of hotels and hostels in the area, and a few recommended alternatives will be presented here as soon as possible. In the meantime, a good place to start is Västsverige or Google.

The exact event location will be released in a somewhat spectacular manner, as previous years. The place where you will have to go in order to watch this spectacle and gain access to the exact event location will be published at least 24 hours prior to the event via multiple communication channels, so keep an eye out in your email accounts and on this web page.

Getting there


By air
Gothenburg has two international airports, Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport (GOT) and Gothenburg City Airport (GSE), both located within a 20 minute drive from the event location. Both airports offers bus transport to central Gothenburg as well as rental cars. Please contact your local travel agent for detailed flight information.
By train
Gothenburg central station is one of the busiest in Sweden with direct trains from both Denmark and Norway. For more information, please see SJ.
By boat
It is possible to travel to Gothenburg by boat from Denmark (Fredrikshavn) or Germany (Kiel). For more information, please see Stena Line.

Getting to the event location from Gothenburg is best done by car, but there are both trains and buses going to Lerum from Gothenburg. More detailed information will be announced when available.
