Geocache Description:

This multi-cache is mainly in the old town of Rethymnon, and visits historical places as well as newer. The walk is about 2 km. You need a pencil to note the answers and make a calculation in the end and for logging. The cache is a Kinderegg with only log and stashnote


1st. stop: N35 22.156 E24 28.250
Turkish fountain in Koroneou street on the corner of Smyrnis. It was used until the 50’s. The marble inscription above the fountain writes: “This fountain was built to provide water to the people, and the one who will satisfy his thirst from this fountain, may pray for the soul who made it”. On the same wall a bit higher, another marble inscription writes: “This wall shall not be destroyed, for it was made by master Osman”. There shall have been up to 5 fountains around here. Around the corner to Smyrnis one is there still.

Kyria Ton Aggelon (Lady of the Angels) is dedicated to Maria Magdalene and was built during the Venetian occupation. During the Turkish occupation it was transformed into a mosque and a minaret was added in 1680, but it collapsed shortly after.

The Rimondi Fountain from the Venetian period is the most famous in the town and located at the north end of Petychaki square. The current fountain stands on the site of an older fountain believed to have existed since at least 1588. The Venetian governor J. Rimondi started the reconstruction of the current fountain in 1626. The water runs from sprouts that are in form of lions' heads. The fountain is surrounded by cafes, tavernas and shops.

Neratzes mosque and minaret was the Church of Santa Maria in the Venetian period and belonged to the Augustine Monastery situated in the center of the Venetian square. The church was transformed into a mosque in 1657 and the highest minaret of the town. The minaret is currently undergoing restoration work. The mosque has mainly been used for lectures, concerts and theatre performances. The entrance is on the north side. On the south side is the new big square in the old town of Rethymnon with a new Culture house.

Porta Guora is also called the great gate. The gate represents the only remaining part of the ancient fortified wall of the town of Rethymnon. Here is a small place to sit down and look around.

Monument of the Unknown Soldier on Iroon Square. The square have been renovated and opened up against the sea. It has become a good place to sit down, take a coffee, something to eat or just relax. From here you can walk along the beaches to the east side, or along the seaside to the west side with the Venezian Harbour and the Fortezza. New walking and biking facilities have been worked out during the last years.
