Geocache Description:

An ammo can in the woods. Hidden in a little used corner of Fahnestock State Park.

I (bac) had always wondered about the southern end of the white trail in Fahnestock State park. The trail mostly runs parallel to the Taconic through an otherwise inaccessible (by trail) corner of the park.

Last winter Freya the geopup and I scouted out the trail starting at Peekskill Hollow Rd (see parking coordinates). We found it to be a a rather curious trail providing an extreme dichotomy between the Taconic and its attendant cars and noise on one side and a chaotic, wild, beautiful rock-strewn slope up to the ridge on the other side. 3/4 of a mile from Peekskill Hollow Rd, the trail leaves the Taconic and climbs up to the top of the ridge. As we climbed, we left behind the road noise and entered a little piece of paradise. That day in the winter, there was a foot of snow on the ground, the air was cold and clear, and it was so quiet we could have heard a pin drop. The views from the ridge in the winter were excellent. We watched an absolutely glorious sunset that had the reds and purples reflecting from the snow around us.

In Sep. 2010, I took Freya back out for another walk along the white tail to place an ammo can up on the ridge as an incentive for YOU to come enjoy a hike along this interesting trail and to experience the little bit of the Upland Paradise hidden away in the southeast corner of Fanhestock. There's very little reason other than the pleasure of the hike (OK and the cache) for you to walk this section of the white trail, though you could continue along it a couple of miles to Jonboy's excellent "Ridge of Sighs" cache. I hope you enjoy the trail and the hike as much as I did. I decided to only place one cache along the trail, but there are many good spots for a hide if you want to bring a new cache with you.
