The Lump, Portree, Isle of Skye
Some 15 years after the first Isle of Skye Highland Games, the Skye
Gathering Committee bought a piece of ground known as the Lump,
above Portree Bay, in 1892. It was first used as the Games' venue
in 1893, after part of the rock had been blasted away to create an
amphitheatre which could hold up to 5000 spectators.
Renovated and refreshed in 1997, The Lump has remained home to the
Isle of Skye Highland Games for well over a century.
There is also a small tower, built in 1851. This tower has been
restored and it is possible to climb to its top, for an even better
view of the surrounding landscapes.
If you go there in a nice weather is looks so idyllic that it is
hard to believe that this place was used, in the old times, for
public hangings.
