Geocache Description:

Cache is on Mt. Igman in a deep forest above a memorial to three Americans and one French soldier who died trying to bring peace to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

With the fall of communism in the former Yugoslavian federation, conflict and bloodshed broke out among the region’s three ethnically-based political factions. The Bosniaks and Croats declared their independence, while the Serbs favored staying with the federation. War ensued with tragic consequences. From 1992 to 1995, the war-torn country saw some 100,000 people killed and another 2 million displaced.

In August 1995, the United States sent three American envoys to Sarajevo to try to negotiate a peace agreement between the warring parties. They attempted to reach the city via a rough hewn supply road over Mt. Igman, southwest of Sarajevo. They traveled in a United Nations armored vehicle driven by a French soldier but were all killed when the rain-soaked road they were traveling on collapsed under their vehicle which subsequently rolled down a 500-meter slope.

The four were: Joseph Kruzel, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Affairs; Robert C. Frasure, U.S. Special Envoy for the Former Yugoslavia; S. Nelson Drew, Colonel, U.S. Air Force, serving at the National Security Council; and Stephan Reault, soldier, Army of the Republique Francaise.

Today, at the end of a gravel road cut into the steep forested hillside of Mount Igman, is a monument marking the location where the four men perished. The monument was built in 1997. Every year since then, on the anniversary of their deaths, U.S., French, Bosnian, and other officials, as well as people from the local community, meet at the memorial to remember those who gave their lives that others might live.

The cache is located on the heavily wooded hillside above the memorial. The road is, well, not the best but a regular car can get to the parking area if driven very carefully. The well prepared path starts at the armored car and goes uphill in six (6) bends to the cache. The first three bends are very short and are right at the armored car. The last three are regular switchbacks for the trail. The cache is approximately 75 meters from the start of the path “as the crow flies,” i.e., in a straight line. But don’t take the straight line as the path itself will take you very close to the cache.
