Geocache Description:

Manjusri Monastery is a Buddhist monastery near the town of Dzuun Mod (100 Trees) in Mongolia. You can make a visit to this cache from UB in a short afternoon.

Some of the following from Wikipedia.

Manjusri Khiid (???????? ????) was a monastery established in 1733 CE, south of the Bogd Khan Uul Mountain range, 4km north of the Töv Aimag capital of Dzuunmod.

Manjusri (Tib: Jampelyang) is the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Over time the monastery grew into a complex that housed more than 20 temples with over 300 resident monks. During the communist purges of the 1920's and 30's the monastery was persecuted, and finally in 1937, the monastery was completely destroyed and all the monks either killed or exiled. If you have Mongolian friends, almost certainly family members of their's were affected in these terrible purges, either here or elsewhere in the country. The remains of the temple have been turned into a museum.

This was one of the first places I came to when I arrived in Mongolia some many years ago and the last place I will visit as I move on to do other things. Although the complex is close to another cache, I felt it deserved one for itself, as it in fact was the orignal theme for the Searcher's of the Lost Khiid series. Hopefully I will come back to do more and certainly there are other places like this place and others that deserve some recognition. Feel free to add to this series as you travel around and visit this beutiful country.

A small fee is charged to visit the complex and the museums, one of which is run by the Aimag and contains some interesting natural history. The Monastery museum is well worth the walk up the hill. There is a small bit of elevation but it can be easily negotiated by anyone who can walk up their church steps! The cache is on the same elevation as the Monastery museum.

I have left a medal of the Bhudda who watches over my birth year and you can buy one of these in the museum shop for 200 Tugrigs (about USD 1.50). Please leave my medal in the cache and add yours to it. It should make an interesting collection some day! I have left a Mongolian postage stamp and boolmarker for FTF.

A new temple has been built in Zuunmod also dedicated to Manjusri and is well worth a stop.
