Geocache Description:

This is my first cache planted with Wingprime, whom has introduced me to this game of Geocache. This area was chosen because we're always around this area for the neighborhood itself and the different types of foods. I hope you'll like this area as much as we do. Please note the cache is not on the floor. BYOP =)

A portion of the Second Avenue El was constructed on Allen Street in 1878, blocking out most of the light from this narrow street. Partly because of the El, Allen Street became one of the poorest and least desirable parts of the Lower East Side. The street was noted for its houses of prostitution, which were the shame of the Jewish community that dominated the neighborhood.

The Lower East Side (also known as LES, L.E.S. and Loisaida) is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is roughly bounded by Allen Street, East Houston Street, Essex Street, Canal Street, Eldridge Street, East Broadway, and Grand Street. It has traditionally been an immigrant, working class neighborhood, but has undergone rapid gentrification in recent years, prompting The National Trust for Historic Preservation to place the neighborhood on their list of America's Most Endangered Places.

The modern LES neighborhood has become home to numerous contemporary art galleries. As the neighborhood gentrified and has become safer at night, it has become a popular late night destination.
