Geocache Description:

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) added a "W" to his last name to distance himself from his relative John Hathorne, infamous judge who presided over the Salem Witch Trials which resulted in the hanging of 19 men and women convicted of witchcraft. Much of Hawthorne's writing is concerned with the inherent sinfulness of humanity, including his most famous novel, The Scarlet Letter.
