The first mention of the town dates from 1396 and the first official act in 1406 and belongs to Mircea the Old, prince of Wallachia, which opposed the three decades of resistance to the Ottoman Empire, with resounding victories. Vlad Tepes ascend the throne in 1456 and entered in history with victory in 1462 against the Sultan Mehmet II, conqueror of Constantinople. Radu cel Mare started in 1499 the building of the Church of St. Nicholas on the Hill, known today as Dealu Monastery. Brave Michael succeeded in 1600, for the first time, the union of the three Romanian principalities and was recognized throughout Europe as a defender of Christianity. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) was a great supporter of culture. He strengthened the fortifications of the town, repaired the old church and built many new ones. Constantin Brâncoveanu was the last leader to provide country's stability, as he was followed by the Fanariot Regime. Tudor Vladimirescu's uprising of 1821, after it shined in Bucharest ends sad at Targoviste, as Tudor and many of its soldiers are massacred by Metropolitan eteristi. Târgovistenii actively participated in the Romanian Revolution 1848 and supported all political acts of Unionists. Modernization of Romanian society in the late nineteenth century meant a great advance economically, illustrated by illuminating the city in 1863, the opening race of diligence and then railway Bucharest-Targoviste, founding the first industrial companies - the military arsenal and building oil refineries. Targoviste has paid tribute to all the major battles of the Nation: the independence war of 1877-1878, the First and Second World War. Half a century of communist dictatorship led to constraints in the political, social and cultural life. After December 22, 1989, a new constitution has restored the political life on a democratic course.
