Geocache Description:

You can reach this from the pavement, and any cacher with some 'nose' for the sport should be able to grab it without the hint as the hiding place is fairly obvious in spite of the cache not being visible,

This site was chosen as when walking by I spotted an excellent hiding place, but luckily the local history of Maitland Park did not let me down.
There is a curved road leading away to the north from the cache site. In 1847 you would be standing at the edge of London facing the carriage drive for a new school. Know as the 'Orphan Working School' it took in unfortunates and educated them as well as teaching them a trade up to the age of 14. Its benefactors included Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria.

The school moved from here in 1949 to become Royal Alexandra and Albert School in Reigate. All that remains that I could find when the cache was hidden consisted of the school gates a few yards up the drive on the left. Sadly even these have now gone as modern apartments are being built on the site.

When the local council demolished the last buildings a few years ago there was a claim from their press department that in the past this was a place of cruelty where children were beaten and given numbers rather than names.
