Parking supposedly requires a resident sticker, however as this is a quick park-and-grab, you can do without. Summer might be trickier (we’ll see). Grab this while the muggles are distracted with the Manchester Yacht Club, the beach and the pretty view on the other side of the parking lot.
In 1895, the Town of Manchester purchased what is now some six acres of public land at Tuck's Point from Dr. Cyrus A. Bartol, a Unitarian minister who had a sharp eye for real estate and who at one time owned Norton's Point (too private for a cache) and much of Smith's Point (check out our GC2F8NK Proctor Cove cache, a Premium Member offering) as well as his own substantial dwelling at Glass Head. The town paid Dr. Bartol $5,000 for the property at Tuck's Point and an additional $1,000 for an existing wharf. It then conveyed to two Manchester Yacht Club members, Gordon Prince and William A. Tucker, the wharf and a parcel of land about 30 feet wide at its northern end, pending the incorporation of the MYC.
If you should find a travel bug in this cache or any other cache, please be sure to log it electronically twice, once when you grab it and again when you put it in another cache. This must be done so that its travels can be tracked. You must be a signed on member to do this. July 2012: New non-resident parking coordinates at N 42° 34.013 W 070° 46.814 . We are not adding these as a parking waypoint for two reasons: 1) This parking is not available year-round and 2) The main parking lot is preferable at least because you get to see how nice a spot this is. If you Park ‘N’ Grab from this parking, please go check out the other side of the main parking lot (this is why we put the cache here in the first place)! This is overflow parking for the summer season, during the winter they store boats here. The nearby edifice is not a residence, but a “boat hangar.” Park here especially if you are a non-resident and you plan to stay a while. Enjoy!
This is our first cache, important in that we thought Manchester-by-the-Sea was under-represented for geocaches, and we felt the need to correct that. First-To-Find prize is an American coin rarer than our usual leave, an “Indian Head” cent from 1895 to reflect the history mentioned above, 115+ years old! The obverse of this coin isn’t an Indian, but “Lady Liberty” wearing an Indian headdress. Back then Lady Liberty’s profile graced all of our pocket change. FTF to chief turtles -- well done!
