Le 22 juin 1741, après 4h45 de marche, deux jeunes anglais, William Windham et Richard Pococke, guidés par des chasseurs-cristalliers de Chamonix arrivent sur les hautes rives du glacier des Bois.
A l’époque tous les glaciers sont en crus, c’est le « petit âge glaciaire » qui a débuté au moyen-âge pour se terminer vers 1850.
Impressionnés par ces « glacières de Savoye », ils comparent le lieu à « un grand lac agité d’une grosse brise et gelé d’un coup ! ». Le glacier des Bois devient alors la « Mer de Glace ». La nouvelle de cette beauté fait le tour des salons genevois et londoniens : le tourisme montagnard est né.
La « Pierre aux Anglais » immortalise l’événement sur le bord de la moraine glaciaire de l’époque.
De nos jours, le glacier s’écoule deux cents mètres plus bas…

On June 22, 1741, after walking 4:45, two young Englishmen William Windham and Richard Pocock, guided by crystal-hunter of Chamonix arrive on the high banks of the Glacier des Bois.
At that time all the glaciers are very big. It was the "little ice age" which began in the middle ages and ended around 1850.
Impressed by these "glacières de Savoye”, they compare the place as "a great big lake agitated by a breeze and frozen at once!”. The Glacier des Bois becomes the "Mer de Glace". The news of this beauty makes the rounds of fairs in Geneva and London: mountain tourism was born.
The "Pierre aux Anglais" immortalizes the event on the edge of the glacial moraine of the time.
Today, the glacier flows two hundred meters below ...
