Nichts bleibt wie es war und ein Flusslauf ohne Krümmungen ist
entweder begradigt oder folgt einer geologischen Störung, die ihm
keine andere Möglichkeit lässt. Meist bildet er Kurven, die sich
als verflochtenes „Zopfmuster“ entwickeln oder er
schafft als Mäander bezeichnete Flussschleifen.
Jeder Fluss verändert im Laufe von Jahrmillionen sein Flussbett und
dies war auch beim relativ jungen Neckar, der ursprünglich zur
Donau hin entwässerte, der Fall.
Nothing remains as it once has been and a river without bends has
either been straightened or is following a geological fault line
which does not leave other options. Usually a river flows across
the landscape in a network of channels forming so-called braided
rivers or snakes across the landscape in meanders.
Within millions of years of its existence every river changes its
bed and this also happened to the young Neckar river which
originally drained into the Danube.
Mit dem Einbruch des Rheingrabens im Tertiär wurden diese
Seitenflüsse – verstärkt durch die zwischeneiszeitlichen
Hochwasser – oft zu reißenden Strömen mit hoher Energie. Das
bewirkte an vielen Engstellen einen Durchbruch und zurück blieben
ein Umlaufberg und ein Umlauftal als Zeugen der alten
Flussgeschichte. Auf der Strecke zwischen Binau und Neckargmünd
sind allein sieben dieser Flussschleifen nachgewiesen. In
Neckarkatzenbach hat der Fluss vor rund 200.000 Jahren diesen
Durchbruch geschafft und in der Folge ist das alte Flussbett
kontinuierlich trockengefallen.
With the collapse of the Rhine rift in the tertiary the side rivers
– intensified by the flood waters of the interglacial period
– developed to torrential rivers with a high energy
potential. At many narrow points this resulted in a break through
with a circular hill or mountain and a circular valley as
testimonials of the geological river history. Between Binau and
Neckargmünd – a relatively short distance – seven of
these old sinuosities have been documented. The break through at
Neckarkatzenbach happended about 200.000 years ago and the old
river bed was continuously drying up.
Vom Beobachtungspunkt aus kann man den
Mittelberg, den sanften Gleithang mit dem auf der anderen Talseite,
am Prallhang liegenden Neckarkatzenbach sehen. Der Neckar ist dabei
aber nie hier oben geflossen und hat sich langsam eingegraben. Der
Odenwald hat sich im Laufe der Jahrmillionen allmählich angehoben
und tut dies auch heute noch. Mit 0,3 Millimeter pro Jahr mit einer
geologisch recht beachtlichen Geschwindigkeit.
From the location of the Earthcache you can see the
„Mittelberg“ on the other side of the valley where the
Neckar deposited its sediments and Neckarkatzenbach and the side of
the undercut slope. However, the river Neckar had never had its bed
up here and never slowly carved its bed down to the present river
level. Over millions of years the “Odenwald” was slowly
lifted. A process which still continues today with 0,3 mm per year
which is geologically quite an impressive speed.
