Vana's best friend grew up on a nearby homestead, and she vividly remembers a particular Halloween night in this cemetery where her friends' dad set up a very scary scene involving rattling chains and fresh game for her and her friends to ‘encounter.’ You can imagine how scary this was for a group of nine year old girls!
From the plaque: "St. John's Roman Catholic Church was first built in 1905 was 500 feet south and also served as Willmont school until 1937. The second church building started in 1916 was 700 feet south. A fire destroyed the building on the night of November 25, 1971. The cross from the 120 foot tower is now located in the cemetery. The parish originally served about 140 families who immigrated from the U.S.A. and Europe of German and Hungarian descent."
Here, there is a miniature model of the church that burned down, as well as the partially melted remains of the church bell.
