This is another of a Civil War themed set of caches. The cache is situated in Chester near the site of what is now known as the King Charles Tower. You are looking for something unusual with a log but no pencil. There is nearby pay and display parking or moorings with GZ a short walk off of the Chester City Walls. The cache is not on the city walls, but a walk along the walls to the tower may help in locating the cache site which is at the lower level but not at canal level.
King Charles Tower The Tower is located on the North-East corner of the Chester City Walls and was previously called the Pheonix Tower but locally known as the Newton Tower; after the Chester Suburb that it overlooks. Its name was changed to King Charles Tower following, as legend has it, the day that King Charles reportedly stood and watched what would turn out to be one of the last decisive battles of the English Civil War on the 24th September 1645 – The Battle of Rowton Heath. It is there that Cromwell’s Parliamentarian forces defeated King Charles's Royalist army. Rowton Heath is some 2.5 miles away and cannot be seen from the Tower. An inscription above the door reads: 'King Charles Stood on this Tower Sept. 24 1645 and saw his army defeated on Rowton Moor'. What King Charles may have actually witnessed was later skirmishes on Hoole Heath (now a suburb of Chester) and his defeated army fleeing back to the relative safety of Chester. The Tower, sadly is rarely open to the public, although it has recently been repaired so may be on future Heritage days. It has long been used as a museum and houses a fascinating exhibition depicting events during the English Civil War in Chester, including 17th century Armour, pottery and musket balls, and on the upper floor, a map of the Rowton Moor battlefield and several detailed miniature reconstructions of the key events of the siege. The site is popular with tourists and locals so you will likely be under observation from all sides so stealth is required. The cache site is on land below the walls but not at the canal level, access to GZ from the walls via steps beyond Lamp No. 8 or along the canal path, it can be muddy underfoot so suitable footwear is required, a fantastic view of the Tower from the observation rail – once found please replace where found, as this cache regularly goes missing - I hope you enjoy
