Geocache Description:

Cache and grab in an easy location in Churchill village. Parking available within 200 metres in a lay-by opposite the village hall. Cache is a small clip lock box with a log, pencil and a few small swap items. FTF prize of a pound, for finding the pound! Don't spend it all at once!

There is no need to enter the pound to find the cache, as the gate is bolted locked. Please take care with children as this road is 30 mph limit but drivers often speed by.

Churchill Pound

The term pound means an enclosure. The word has Saxon origins and is a place where straying or illegally pastured animals were confined. The Pound in Churchill is made of brick, but others are simple fences or made of local stone. A pound usually has a single entrance, sometimes with stone jams, wooden gateposts or brick pillars. Pounds came in a large variety of sizes from a few square meters, like at Churchill, to pounds over 0.5ha in size.

Once pounds went out of use, many became derelict and were demolished, but Churchill is lucky enough to have retained a pound in good condition. The pound was originally built in 1862 and renovated in 1966. It was listed as a Grade II listed building in 1987.

We have driven past this strange little building hundreds of times before finding out what its origin and use was. The Hagley Spook geocoin activated and placed in cache, looking for spooky adventures after dark....
