INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST
The Indiana
Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of
historic cemeteries and historic sites built by Hoosier
Pioneers. In just over three years, the quest has grown to over six
hundred caches hidden in Colorado, North Dakota, Wisconsin,
Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, and Ontario and the
hiders have grown to THIRTY cacher teams, most of which are
comprised of Dogs and their Humans.
Over 1,000 cacher teams have logged over 20,500
finds.

"The German
Community"
Now know at Concordia Cemetery, it was
actually founded on 10 acres in May of 1870 as the Lutheran
Cemetery. The cemetery was created by the board of trustees for the
St. Paul's German Evangelical Lutheran Church. It started with 550
plots and has obviously grown over time. The original section of
the cemetery appears to be at the north end of the cemetery you
where you will see many German names and even most of the
inscriptions are in German. Many of the internees were business and
community leaders as can be seen from the many impressive
headstones and statues.
Family
Grocer
I have discovered information that show W F Resener and J F Resener
founded a family grocery store in 1866 at the corner of East Street
and Locerbie. They were said to stock both staple and fancy goods,
including teas, coffee, spices, fruits and canned goods. There was
a back room where they kept baled hay, straw and heavy merchandise.
They also had a wagon and offered free delivery anywhere in the
city. Obviously, it was a smaller city, but that's still service
you don't see today.
Real Estate Magnate
This monument may be the finest in the cemetery. William F Piel Sr.
founded the Union Starch Company in 1867. The initial factory
burned down but was rebuilt by 1872. The entire family ended up in
the business and in 1900 his sons founded the Piel Brothers Starch
Company. That company became National Starch Company that still
exists off Raymond Street. It was puchased in 1939 by National
Adhesive, but the parent company retained the National Starch Name.
Today it is the National Starch and Chemical Company.
William Senior owned enough real estate that his descendents formed
a corporation to manage his holdings after his death. According to
an article in the Indianapolis Star in 1913, the corporation was
capitalized for $420,700. His holdings included several business
blocks and other real estate.
The Lutheran
Reverand
I've found a record showing a Pator M Tirmenstein conducting the
installation of a new pastor at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in
Indianapolis in 1915. I feel pretty comfortable that this is the
same Pastor Martin Tirmenstein whose grave we see here. It would be
interesting to know if Reverend Tirmenstein was a leader in the
church when the cemetery was founded in 1870.
Civil War
Veteran
This was the only Civil War marker I discovered while driving
through the cemetery. While there were well known German units that
participated for the Union in the American Civil War, the
Indianapolis German community either did not have a lot of veterans
or their headstones did not record their military service.
The 132nd Indiana regiment only existed from May 1864 until
September 1864. They saw no combat but served as railroad guards in
Tennessee and Alabama. Henry Keil's marker has been damaged, likely
by a lawn mower.
