Timothy Sargeant’s pitchfork was left on a sapling branch when the young man went to the Civil War. In those days it was customary for each person to have a pitchfork custom made to fit his size, swing, etc. Early in the Civil War hay wagons went around the country roads stopping to ask for volunteers to serve in the army. Sylvester and Timothy Sargeant volunteered when the wagon came to their farm on Hungry Run road. Timothy did not want anyone to touch his pitchfork until he returned.
Both men were captured and interred in Andersonville Prison. Sylvester escaped and later died in the “Battle Above the Clouds”. When General Sherman freed the prisoners from Andersonville, Timothy died as he was walking out the gate.
(Information provided by Dr. Harold Sargeant, great grandnephew)
There is a memorial plaque along Hungry Run Road that also tells the story. We've made this cache very easy as to not disturb the historical object.
