Lock 27 was built in 1846 to join into the "feeder canal" which brought water from above the dam on the Grand River at Dunnville and supplied it to the original Welland Canal at Feeder Junction near Welland. This lock at Port Maitland provided access for ships to the feeder canal which functioned as a regular branch of the Welland Canal from 1845 to 1850 while the main canal was being reconstructed from Feeder Junction to Port Colborne.
The Stage 1 coordinates are for waymark WM487M. You will have to determine the exact coordinates for Stage 2 of this cache from the information you will obtain at this site.
Find the answers to the following questions.
1. What year was the large aerial photo by Jack V. Elliot taken?
2. What years are shown on the bench plaque for someone who "loved to bring history to life"?
3. What years are shown on the bench plaque for someone who was a "Port Maitland Fisherman"?
You should have recorded 5 years. Arrange them in ascending order and label them J, K, L, M, N.
A = L - K + M - N
B = Lx2 - J - K - 1
Divide the answers you got for A and B each by 1,000 to get the final values for A and B.
Subtract A from the waymark coordinates N 42 51.945 and
Add B to the waymark coordinates W 079 33.965 to determine the cache coordinates.
The terrain is level except for the last few feet which may present a challenge. The cache contains a log book and a pencil and a "Canada, eh?" button for trading purposes.
