Not just
another Boring Rock-Cut
Well you have
passed a 1000 of these rock-cuts.
You may have even drove through this one.
But have you ever stopped and enjoyed, what these rock-cuts have to
offer?
They are full of educational and learning experiences.
The History of Limestone.
Limestone is formed from deposition of the skeletal remains of dead
sea organisms
and the precipitation of the mineral calcite out of aqueous
solutions with high concentrations of the mineral.
Layers or strata may appear in limestone which indicate individual
periods of deposition.
As massive amounts of sedimentation occur over time, the weight
from above squeezes out the water
and space between particles in a process called compaction.
Minerals that form between the deposited particles acts as a cement
to hold them together in a process called cementation.
You can see the layers in this Picture
Limestone is a sedimentary rock made up of calcite
(CaCO3) as its main mineral.
It is ordinarily white but may be colored by impurities, iron oxide
making it brown, yellow, or red and carbon making it blue, black,
or gray.
Why is this Rock-cut so Special?
Well, this rock-cut has some unique features you will discover as
you take the
walk from the top to the bottom.
To log this Earth Cache send in the answers
to the following questions
through my geocaching profile.
1) At the posted Coordinates is an Odd section of the
Rock-cut.
How is it different from the rest of the Rock-cut and what
is it's approximate height and width?
2) At the Posted "Space in the Layers (Reference
Point)"
There is an obvious line that runs the length of the Rock-cut
It looks like a 1/2-1 inch gap that is there for no reason.
How high is it off the ground?
3) At the posted "The band of Light(Reference Point)
A band of limestone changes color.
(As seen in the above picture)
Give me your best guess why?
How thick is this band at its thickest point in inches?
How long does this band run in Meters?
4) What is the difference in Altitude from the top of the rock-cut
to the bottom?
DO NOT CLIMB THE ROCK CUT
I want the difference as if you were driving down through the
rock-cut.From where you parked down to Palace Road
BONUS QUESTION
For some cachers with really sharp eyes, there is an optical
illusion at this rock cut.
To try and see it do the following.
Start at the bottom of the rock cut and move very carefully to the
other side of the road.
Start walking up #2 highway.
Near the Band of Light it looks as if the some of the layers of
rocks are not running level?
Why is this, what fools your eyes?
This illusion may be better seen if your driving up through the
rock-cut.
Please enjoy.
DO NOT PARK ON #2 HIGHWAY
THERE IS PARKING AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE
ROCK-CUT
BE SAFE
