Embrun, place forte naturelle, est devenue une cité fortifiée au cours des siècles et Vauban y a laissé son empreinte. Ces fortifications ont progressivement disparu au cours des 19ème et 20ème siècles, avec l'arrivée du chemin de fer et l'urbanisation croissante.
Cependant plusieurs vestiges sont encore visibles, en particulier dans le quartier Delaroche où l'on trouve La Manutention (caserne du 17ème siècle), la chapelle des Capucins et un imposant mur de fortification.

Embrun’s natural defenses have been enhanced by man made fortifications over time and Vauban was a key contributor. These fortifications have gradually disappeared during the last two centuries due to increased building activities resulting from the railway construction.
A few vestiges are still to be seen in the Delaroche area, including La Manutention (barracks from the 17th century), the Capucins chapel and an imposing fortification wall.
