Die "Bunten Mergel" entstanden vor etwa 222 Mio Jahren und
bestehen aus rotbraunen bis violetten sowie überwiegend grüngrauen
Tonmergelsteinen. . Die Mergelsteine wurden in großen
Binnenseen abgelagert. Durch die hohe
Verdunstung kam es zur Anreicherung von Salzen und Gips. In den
regenreichen Zeiten wurden häufig Sandsteinbänke in den
Tonmergel eingelagert..
