The Don Harrison Community Trail Dedication CITO Event is being
held by the Pittsburgh Area Geocaching Association with the
assistance and permission of the Westmoreland Conservatory.
A CITO, or Cache In Trash Out, event allows geocachers to
combine a social event with a way to give back to the reserves,
parks and green spaces in which they "play". These types of events
bring together large groups of people armed with trash bags, gloves
and sunscreen and ready to wage war on the dreaded litterbug. Past
CITOs have been highly successful in removing bottles, tires, and
other assorted trash, leaving a cleaner, more beautiful park for
all to enjoy.
Don Harrison is a former 4-term president of Westmoreland
Conservancy. It was during his tenure that we became land owners
and acquired the King, Walter, Tomer and Flinn Reserves. He did the
groundwork for the Potter's Corner acquisition, which was completed
right after his term expired, and he was was involved in all
aspects of the Caywood Reserve... See More process. Of the 265
acres currently owned by the Westmoreland Conservancy, Don had a
role in acquiring all but the 52-acre McGinnis Reserve. We thought
this would be fitting recognition for all that he has done for the
Conservancy and the community.
There are no pavilions or sources of water at the area, so it is
suggested you bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on for our pot
luck lunch. Please bring some water as well to keep yourself
hydrated. If you have any light weight portable tables, those would
be much enjoyed! Due to the conservancy's charters, they will not
be adding any pavilions or permanent structures to the area, as the
goal is to leave the land clean and untouched. We will provide a
water cooler and some cups as well as hand sanitizer.
We will be meeting at 10AM at the posted coordinates and will
proceed to leave out on the trails shortly after. We will return to
the posted coordinates for lunch around 12:30. We will then proceed
to clear more trash after lunch. Details are in the works for
handicap transportation and shuttle service to and from the parking
coordinates. Please check back for further details close to event
time. Post what you plan to bring for the pot-luck in your will
attend log. You must park at the posted parking coordinates. Do
not attempt to drive the nearby private road to the posted
coordinates, it requires a 4x4 and it is a private road.
If possible, we would like everyone to bring some gloves and a
couple of trash bags per person in attendance if possible. We will
have free trash bags and gloves for those who need them. All trash
will be collected at a designated site for later disposal.
Please reserve this date and come out and join us! Don't forget
to check back for more updates!
UPDATE: As a reminder, the event will be centered in the middle
of the Caywood property next to the old house. The driveway is in
poor condition and there isn't room for cars at the location. Due
to this, you are asked to take the nature trail from Murrysville
Community Park to the location. The hike is just under half a mile.
Since it might be hard for people to carry picnic supplies this
distance, a shuttle service will be provided to the event. Please
park at posted parking coordinates and call my cell phone. I will
be able to bring you and any picnic supplies right up to the event
via a red Ford Excursion 4x4. Please call me at ### ### #### on
arrival for the shuttle service. If you wish to be picked up from a
location other than the posted parking coordinates, please have
your coordinates ready when you call for the shuttle.
PICNIC: The Westmoreland Conservancy will be providing some food
and tents. If possible, feel free to bring some dishes of food to
share with everyone! Also, please bring lawn-chairs for the
picnic!!
WAYPOINTS: Please add the waypoints posted on the cache page to
your GPS, they will be important to finding the event without
getting lost, as the event isn't very close to the nearest
road.
