environs de l'An IV après Jésus Christ, le premier évêque de
Châlons est inhumé sur le site. C'est en hommage à cet hôte
illustre que la petite cité prendra son nom : SAINT-MEMMIE. Les
habitants s'appelleront désormais les Mengeots (du nom de l'abbaye
de Saint-Menge). Même si SAINT-MEMMIE n'en est pas devenue une
ville sainte pour autant, son histoire est étroitement liée à celle
des ecclésiastiques. L'abbaye reste le pôle qui centralise les
activités jusqu'au XVIIIème siècle. La population avoisinante (des
agriculteurs pour la plupart) gravite autour de l'Abbaye.Le XIIIème
siècle voit apparaître un clivage entre deux microsociétés : la
classe bourgeoise émergente et les religieux. En 1231, une charte
consomme le divorce déjà annoncé. Les bourgeois ne sont plus soumis
à la tutelle de l'abbaye, et, en outre, il leur a été octroyé le
droit de s'occuper des affaires de la commune. Malgré quelques
soubresauts, la tendance ira en s'accentuant pour aboutir au
XVIIIème siècle à la dissolution de la communauté monastique.
Around the Year IV AD, the first
bishop of Chalons was buried on the site. To celebrate this
illustrious host that small city takes his name :
SAINT-MEMMIE. Residents now Mengeots be named (the name of the
abbey of Saint-Menge).Although Saint-Memmie did not become a holy
city for all its history is closely tied to the church. The abbey
is the hub that centralizes activities until the eighteenth
century. The surrounding population (mostly farmers) revolves
around the Abbey.The thirteenth century saw a split between two
